In the movie Scent of a Woman, Al Pacino plays an army officer blinded by an errant grenade. Pacino's character is bitter and angry at the world. He is staying with distant relatives and their young family. He makes their life miserable.
When the family takes a short vacation over Thanksgiving, they hire a kid from a nearby prep school to take care of Pacino. On Thanksgiving, Pacino and his "sitter" arrive uninvited at the house of Pacino's brother. There is a horrible argument and both Pacino and the young companion are asked to leave and are subsequently thrown out of the brother's house.
When Jesus was unwelcome in Jerusalem, his disciples wanted to "command fire to come down from heaven and consume them." Jesus said he wanted to empower people, not "destroy men's lives."
The important lesson here is that we must be ready to extend hospitality to those whom we dislike intensely. The Pacino character and his companion had no excuse to crash the Thanksgiving dinner. They were rude, ornery and abusive. The example set by Jesus was one of resisting temptation to use violence to punish a wrongdoer.
