Mrs. Severson, a ninety-plus-year-old member of the congregation needed her fence painted. The pastor made the announcement at church that anyone who would like to help should gather at Mrs. Severson's home on Thursday for a painting bee.
Early Thursday morning, four young teenagers, three boys and one girl turned up to paint. Mrs. Severson showed them where the paint and brushes were stored and the four set to work. Later in the morning a couple more girls came to offer their help, and one more girl arrived in time to help paint the last section of the fence and clean up.
Mrs. Severson was thrilled to see so many young people coming to help her out. She offered lemonade and cake all day, and at the end of the day, after the teens had cleaned up the brushes and stored the paint, she offered each of them ten cents. Believe it or not those young people did not complain, as did the workers in the Jesus' parable. Eyes gleaming, each teen pocketed their money with great thanks. And to put it into perspective, the year was 1931 in the midst of the Great Depression and each teen was so thrilled with his or her great treasure that none of them begrudged anyone else's good fortune.
