My family and I lived...

My family and I lived on the Gulf Coast of Texas for a number of years, in an area where fig trees had the potential to bloom and bear good fruit. We were excited to learn there were fig trees in our yard. However, when we moved into our home we learned from friends that the previous tenants had been unable to harvest figs from the trees. One neighbor suggested we should cut down the trees, dig out the roots, and seed the area to grass or plant flowers, making that section of the yard "productive and useful." We decided to wait through one growing season, working with a spirit of focused nurture, to see if the figs would bear good fruit. During that season we worked the soil, fertilized, watered and lightly cut back the trees. Then we had to wait. Time passed. Small green bulbous growths matured into purplish-brown fruits. Figs! Nurture from outside enabled the trees to produce from within. From that time forward our figs enjoyed their place in the sun. And continued to be "productive and useful" once again. -- Saxon
