My father used to say that a great deal more would get done if people weren't so concerned about who gets the credit. Many people compete in order to attain the high profile, public positions in the church. I remember hearing Gordon Cosby of The Church of the Savior in Washington, D.C., speak of the first year of that church's life.
As many know, the Church of the Savior requires participation in mission in order to be a member of the church. There simply isn't membership without mission. For an entire year Gordon Cosby worked with a young man attempting to discern what gifts he brought to the ministry of Christ through the church. After an entire year's effort the two men discerned the following. The young man could run the mimeograph machine as no one else Cosby had met. That would be the young man's mission; he would run the mimeograph machine. The ministry of Christ requires not only the public work of grand preaching.
The work of Christ is equally in need of people who can run the office machines and contribute to the work that makes the preacher's work possible.
