My grandpa's eyes were ever...

My grandpa's eyes were ever alert for signs. When he noticed ants piling dirt around their hole, he'd say, "It's going to rain." When the raindrops hung heavy on the telephone lines he'd claim, "More rain is coming." When the blackbirds flocked together, "Winter is at hand." When the cows wandered down into the draws, "A storm is brewing."
There was one sign we all recognized. When the first flock of Canada geese appeared honking nosily on the horizon, flying in teacher-perfect vees, we knew that winter followed close behind. It was as if those geese were attached to winter by an invisible thread.
As a boy I never had the time nor the inclination to check out my grandpa's observations. I recall that they came true often enough to warrant repeating them. I also recall that many people scoffed at the sayings as "old world wisdom."
Jesus advised his disciples to be alert for signs which would herald the advent of the kingdom of God. The signs would appear in the heavens, on the earth, and in the sea. A prepared disciple, Jesus indicated, is a watchful disciple.
