My mother was dying, and even though she was in a coma, her youngest brother, Bob, had driven four hours to come and spend the day with us. To the best of my knowledge, my Uncle Bob had never had anything to do with the church, and so I was shocked when he said, "You know, I've thought about faith a lot this week."
Before I could reply my uncle continued. "We were all raised in the church but I got away from it when I was married. I never did go for that organized stuff. But I believe there is a God who created everything. And I believe that God is a just God and that somehow he watches over all of us. I believe that Jesus came and showed us how to live, and I've tried to follow what he taught about love. And I believe that he forgives us because if he didn't there wouldn't be any sense in creating eternal life."
I looked at my uncle in amazement. But before I could reply a nurse came into the room. Unfortunately the moment was lost. I never did get a chance to respond. To this day I wonder what I would have said.
