My parents raised me in the Baptist tradition. I attended church regularly and we observed a very "low church" form of worship. There was little liturgy. The pastors didn't wear robes. The church year was not observed, except for Easter and Christmas. When I went away to college, I became a United Methodist and felt the call to ministry in that denomination. My parents came to my ordination service. It was in an ornate university chapel. It was a "high church" liturgy with much pomp and circumstance. My parents had never been a part of anything like this. But it was amazing that this high priestly ordination service spoke to those present, including Mom and Dad, reminding us through the eloquent liturgy that the greatest call upon our life is service to God. Priests do serve an important function - they point us toward the realities of God.
