Newly-elected President Abraham Lincoln...

Newly-elected President Abraham Lincoln was searching for the right person to name to his cabinet as Secretary of War. He decided upon a man named Stanton. This raised quite a ruckus as Stanton was known to be an enemy of Lincoln's. Stanton hated Lincoln, and had publicly said humiliating and hurtful things about him. Lincoln's close friends asked Lincoln if he had gone crazy. But Lincoln was not willing to treat Stanton like an enemy although that is how Stanton had treated him. He said Stanton was the best man for the job, and overlooked any personal dislikes. By his determination to love Stanton, Lincoln was able to convert Stanton into a friend. And at Lincoln's death, Stanton gave him one of the highest compliments, calling Lincoln one of the greatest men to have ever lived. -- Schmitz
