Nick is the sort of person who thinks he knows what everyone likes or wants. He treats
his family that way, too. For years he planned activities that he thought they would enjoy
without ever consulting his family.
Lisa would go along with whatever her husband planned. However, as their children became teenagers they began to question their father's plans. There were times when the children preferred staying home rather than going on another day trip or family outing. Nick could not understand his children's hesitancy. He would tell them that he wished his parents would have done things with him when he was their age.
The children would confide in their mother things they would never tell their father. The situation became tense and their relationship with Nick grew distant. It was more than just the typical generation gap.
Nick's pastor suggested spending more time listening to his children to find out their interests. His pastor gave him a card with a Bible verse to keep with him, "Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger." Nick said he would try to do better. He would listen more and speak less. Before too long, Nick's relationship with his teenage children had vastly improved.
