Not only in the Peanuts comic strip is the "Psychiatrist In" and the fee is usually higher than Lucy's "5 cents." In light of one of the terms for Holy Spirit – Counselor -- one of the highest callings laity or clergy can have is to be a counselor for another, "convincing ... of sin and of righteousness and of judgment ..." (16:8) Another way of putting it encourages counselors to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. All this under the direction and guidance of the Counselor -- a high calling!
There is such a plethora of types and theoretical approaches for such human counsel so needed at work, at church, or across the back fence. Some promise instant success or fame while others just the ability to hang on.
In his book The Will to Meaning, Victor Frankl recounts some of his experiences in a Nazi death camp. He had done some university work in psychology in Vienna prior to his imprisonment during the war. Apart from being directly sentenced to death or sudden, catastrophic death by accident, he wondered why some survived and others died of starvation or disease over the long, hideous years. He finally concluded that by and large those who survived were those who were able to make meaning out of their existence. Those who understand a "why?" can survive any "how?" they find.
