Does prayer work? Hannah prayed and trusted God; she received a son. Leymah Gbowee prayed and trusted God; she received the sons of war back to the peace table and the beginning of the end of the fourteen-year-long Liberian civil war. One night while Leymah Gbowee was already involved in helping build a peace network in the midst of the civil war, she had a dream. A voice commanded her, "Gather the women to pray for peace." Taking this as a vision from God, she called together the women of Liberia from many tribes, many religions, and many walks of life. Dressed in white, they gathered in an open sports field on Tubman Boulevard in Monrovia day after day, all day long, under the hot tropical sun. Charles Taylor, dictatorial president, saw them every day as he drove back and forth to his office. He finally joined the rebel warlords at the peace table and the result was the birth of a free, democratic Liberia.
