The old castle church in...
Illustration
The old "castle" church in downtown Detroit has been a landmark for more than a century. Thousands of people have passed by on busy Woodward Avenue. Little did they know, even as little did the church members and staff know, what was going on on one of the porches.
The inside door leading out to that porch was permanently closed decades ago. Time was when neighborhood children ran in and out, laughing and singing. But no more. No one paid any attention at all to that side porch. Didn't even see it.
Then the custodian discovered that someone had put an old mattress on that porch and was sleeping there. It actually made somewhat of a private room for him.
He was among the stranded in a society for whom "all things hadn't been made new" yet.
