The old Scot's Golf Manual advised, "No matter how far you are behind, never give in. Your opponent might die." This gives patience a sense of hope, as opposed to the view of patience in Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary. He defined patience as "a minor form of despair disguised as a virtue."
Elizabeth Ann, "Mother," Seton wrote, "When you are excited to impatience, think ... how much more reason God has to be angry with you, than you have for anger against any human being."
Christian patience flows from our faith in God's patience with us. It's a determined and disciplined imitation of God's ways. A young pastor in his first church struggled for years with the congregation's lethargy. In a fit of prayer he said, "If things don't get better here, I'm going to stay." He was taking part in God's divine patience with us.
