An older couple walked slowly...

An older couple walked slowly hand in hand along the beach. They looked at the sea, the sky, the far distant hills, and the pier, but mostly they looked at each other. Their eyes spoke more than words as they walked along the water’s edge. The old man slipped his arms around his wife, touched her hair with his lips, and smiled. A young woman who had been watching turned to her friend and said, “It must be wonderful to be in love like that.” Solomon spoke of such love. It is holy and good and alive with laughter and commitment through the years. It is a joy to be in love. This is a different book of the Bible and one of the few that does not mention God. Pious Jews read it allegorically as an expression of God’s love for Israel. Generations of Christians have seen it as the love between Christ and the church. It is the story of a shepherd girl who loves a shepherd boy in the same village. Her family disapproves and moves her to a vineyard to keep her away from the shepherd. The king discovers her there, and because she is so beautiful, seeks her love. Finally, the king, impressed by her loyalty to her true love, lets her go, and she rejoins the shepherd boy.
