Omma had a practice of giving each of her grandchild two gifts. One gift was an article
she chose from her store of antiques that she had collected over her lifetime. The other
gift was a gift of $5,000 when the grandchild graduated from high school. One of her
granddaughters had a rather rocky high school career, being expelled on numerous
occasions and making it clear that she was only going through school so she could get her
Omma's gift of $5,000. When Omma's children confronted Omma about what was
happening, and demanding that Omma not give this particular grandchild her graduation
gift, Omma replied, "I love her as much as I love all of my grandchildren. My gift
stands."
In a way, Omma was following the example of God, whose gifts are also irrevocable.
