Once, while traveling in an economically depressed area of a mountain state, my wife and I passed through a small town which had just been ravaged by a destructive flood. "What a depressing place," I commented. "Wouldn't it be terrible to live in such an isolated area."
We didn't visit the area again -- until some years later when we were appointed to a church in that same small town. Yet, long before we were transferred again, we had come to love that little portion of God's great universe, including the beautiful, but sometimes violent river which flowed nearby. But most of all, we loved the people who had become our friends and family in Christ.
It is truly miraculous how the light and love of God can dissolve the dark veils of ignorance, prejudice, and fear which keeps us from seeing the beauty and goodness which surrounds us.
