One of the characters in Elie Wiesel's play The Trial of God, voices a Jobian protest against God for permitting the atrocity of the pogrom in Shamgorod in 1649, where a whole community was massacred except for a few Jews who decide to put God on trial. Berish says at the end of the mock trial: "I lived as a Jew, and it is as a Jew that I shall die - and it is as a Jew that, with my last breath, I shall shout my protest to God! And because the end is near, I shall shout louder!"
