In one form or the other, Jesus' sayings about denying ourselves and losing our lives to
find them are the most repeated of his teachings. It's Jesus' direction for us and also his
explanation for his life and ministry.
After Lee Harvey Oswald (the man who shot President Kennedy) was killed, Ernest Campbell's congregation asked what they could do to help in the tragedy. Lee Harvey Oswald's widow, Marina, was a Russian immigrant who'd been in the US only seventeen months. Campbell's congregation offered to help her learn English better.
Not everyone in the congregation agreed and many sent angry letters saying things like the church was unpatriotic. Campbell wrote back to each person. To each criticism he found a way to say that the writer had not shown the congregation that what they did was unlike Christ. If we follow Jesus, we lose our life (or at least our reputation) in service.
