One Monday evening, November 23, 1654, a brilliant French philosopher and mathematician was reading the Bible. Suddenly, the whole room was lighted with a glow that he could only describe in the following words: "Fire! God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, not of philosophers and scholars. Certitude, feeling, joy, peace, God of Jesus Christ."
Blaise Pascal made two copies of this dramatic experience of God's presence in his life. He sewed them into the lining of his coat so that he would always be reminded of this luminous moment that transformed his life.
Peter never forgot the moments he and James and John shared with Jesus, brief as they were, on the mount of transfiguration. Hence, he wanted his readers to know that he wrote out of firsthand awareness of his Lord's majesty -- "for we were with him on the holy mountain."
