One of the most compelling religious paintings in the world is Rembrandt's depiction of Jesus' Presentation in the Temple. The work, painted in 1631 and on exhibit at Mauritshuis, The Hague, portrays the holy family in a semicircle with the priest standing over them with uplifted hands. It is the eighth day and the child has been brought to the temple for circumcision as recorded in Luke 2:21-35. Against a dark background light gleams bright in the center as Simeon holds the child and his face is illuminated by the Christ child's own light. The old man's face is radiant as he looks up to heaven announcing "my eyes have seen your salvation."
Years before Jesus told the disciples about the Spirit of truth, that Spirit moved Simeon to declare God's truth about Jesus.
