One of my best friends...

One of my best friends held the head high school basketball coaching position for two years. He was a deeply committed Christian man who loved the youth and the game of basketball. Upon taking the position he asked the school board to be a visionary group of giving him at least four years to implement a system that would produce a winner. In his first two years he began to develop a solid program but was only able to end up with a .500 record. The school board was dissatisfied and fired him. They cited reasons that they wanted the school to have a winning record like the other schools in the surrounding areas. They were similar to the elders of Samuel's age in that they requested and desired a new king who would lead them in battle, a king who would be a symbol of national power and unity, a king who would guarantee victory. My best friend was devastated at this action of the school board. He had developed a program with some great talent. He had asked for a commitment of four years to put this program in action. He was defeated but kept the faith. The school board immediately hired who they thought would be the coach who would lead the program to victory. In the meantime, my best friend was hired by another school district. I tried to give my friend some advice that came from the book of Samuel. "It is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king or leader." The result of all this came when the following year my best friend led his new team into the state basketball semi-finals. The school that he had coached before, that let him go, who thought they had a new winning coach, went 0-22. -- Smith
