One sports writer reported that golf pro Sam Snead's counsel on how to handle the rough was very simple, "Don't get in it." That is plain advice indeed. It would be ideal if that were a realistic parable on life. The way to stay out of the rough, the hardships, and the difficulties would be to avoid them. People have entertained the dreams of societies in which we could avoid troubles and difficulties. Dreams of a kingdom of God on earth have stirred imaginations of every age. Dreamers have designed their utopias and pursued their high hopes with fervor. We all try to steer clear of trouble and hardship. None of us wants to get into the rough, face crises, disappointments, and failures.
We in America especially have created a success complex. We believe that we should be able to master all the problems that face us. Politically, we have a romantic view of our international relationships. Economically, we have believed that we are the richest and most powerful nation on the earth. Yet recently we have had to face the hard facts that we did not create the Great Society, and today we are a drug culture that must also confess to being one of the most violent societies in the world.
