One of two accounts of King David's last words is found in this lesson. The passage
reminds us of other famous people's last words. People often die as they've lived. So a
person's last words can reflect their personality or character. Here are some
famous last words that have been heard. Irish playwright, Brendan Behan, lay dying in a
hospital. A nun, who was his nurse, was taking his pulse. "Bless you, Sister," said Behan
to the nun, smiling weakly, "may all your sons be bishops" -- humorous last words.
Other's last words are defiant. When his doctor told Ethan Allen the angels were waiting
for him, Ethan Allen shot back, "Well, let 'em wait." "I regret that I have but one life to
give for my country," said Nathan Hale: patriotic last words. Other last words reveal
uncertainty or fear of death. "More light," Goethe was said to have cried out as he died
"More light." King David's last words, as least as recorded here, were words of praise.
Make one wonder: What might our last words be?
