The opening verses in this reading glorify the practice of humility. Do we not have a perfect example of this kind of humility in the blessed virgin Mary? She it is who sang, "God has remembered me, his lowly servant. From now on all people will call me happy, because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me ... He has brought down mighty kings from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly."
Because God, in his wisdom, selected Mary to be the mother of our Lord, she is great indeed. She has been honored as no other person in history. Yet, in her humility and faith, in her obedience and trust, she calls God her Savior. With us, she depends on the goodness and power of the Lord, not her own, all of which personifies the claim in verse 18, "The greater you are, the more you must practice humility."
