In our sophisticated, technological world, it's refreshing to know that God hasn't changed the way folks are called into ministry. It is also refreshing to know that folks haven't changed in their response to God's call!
A dedicated young minister in our conference was sharing her call with one of her parishioners, and she related some of her daily conflicts. She shared her anxiety over prejudicial feedback regarding her pastoral role. Many times she was overwhelmed by her feelings of awe and fear of God. She often dreaded the added responsibility that came with her calling.
The parishioner asked the pastor, "If you had it to do all over again, would you still become a minister?"
"I really don't think that I would have any choice," was her honest reply. She continued, "Even though I have my own doubts and insecurities, I learned a long time ago that the God who called me also empowered me. God never said that the ministry would be easy, but he did promise me two things: his grace and his presence. Somehow, that's always been enough to keep me going."
The Jeremiah of long ago and the dedicated young minister of today didn't seek God's call, but they both shared in the bittersweet joy of being chosen. It is refreshing to know that God still conducts heavenly business as usual.
