Over the course of his 11-year career in the NBA, Manute Bol was something of an oddity. At 7 foot, 7 inches, he was the tallest player in the history of the league, known for his stick-thin build and his shot-blocking ability. After leaving the game in 1995, Manute Bol remained an oddity. Even though he was paid up to $3 million a year and amassed an estimated personal fortune of $12 million, he is now penniless and depends on charity to get by in life.
Where did all that money go? To answer that, you need to know that Manute Bol is a member of the Dinka tribe of southern Sudan. The Dinkas are the world's tallest people and in recent times have also been among the most persecuted. Because the Dinkas are largely Christian, they have been starved, beat-en, and killed by invading Islamic extremists. During his career in the NBA, Manute Bol often considered giving up his lucrative life in sports and returning to the Sudan to fight with his people. But he realized that with his worldwide stature as an athlete and millions of dollars to his name, he was in a unique position to help his country.
So Manute began donating money to relief efforts in the Sudan. He funded refugee camps for people who had been displaced. He even flew in food supplies in a privately chartered jet. Manute Bol used his millions to help his people.
Eventually he was captured and detained in Khartoum and only recently escaped to the United States, where he continues to speak out for the Sudanese people.
God has the same love for his sons and daughters that Manute Bol has for his people. And since we are God's sons and daughters, God will give us all that God has.
