In the text Paul is reminding us that people are watching us. We have influence!
A few years ago I was standing near the door to the dressing room for a college baseball team. A real tussle was going on between a policeman and a seven-year-old lad. "I'm going in there," the boy said pointing to the locker room. "No, you're not!" the officer said. "I'm going in!" the boy said resolutely. "Oh, no, you are not!" said the policeman. Stepping forward, I asked the child, "Why do you want to go in there?" "He's in there," the little one said, speaking of his third base sports idol. You see, folks, each of us has someone who looks up to us. We have influence. There are those that carry their baseball bat over their left shoulder because you do. They wear their hat cocked sideways because you do. They want to play third base because you do. And ...
It's a careful man I want to be, a little fellow follows me,
I do not dare to go astray for fear he'll go the selfsame way.
I cannot once escape his eyes; whatever he sees me do, he tries.
He thinks that I am good and fine, believes in every word of mine.
The bad in me he must not see, this little chap who follows me.
I must remember as I go, through summer's sun and winter's snow,
That I'm building for the years to be in that little chap who follows me!
One never knows who's watching. One never knows what a following one has, what influence, what sway. And, if you live for yourself and feel free to do as you please just as long as no one gets hurt, how can you ever really be certain no one is getting hurt?
