The parable in Matthew 22:1-14 tells how the Jews who were the first to be invited
turned away from the invitation. In order to fill the table at the feast, others were invited.
Gentiles, but some Jews were also included. Whosoever will....
A wonderful truth that Jesus also wants to leave is that his invitation is to a joyous feast, like a wedding feast. God's invitation is to joy -- like a joyous feast. If we refuse the invitation, we will miss the joy that is meant to be a part of the Christian life. We may be deaf to the invitations of Christ because we are too busy with good things. But things that can separate us from the Lord Jesus. The question of wedding garments is a reminder that when we come to Christ we must start a new way of life. We come with the garments of purity, grace, and holiness all of which God provides. We cannot go on living the style of life we had before meeting Christ. We also need the garments of reverence, faith, and expectation.
Jesus told about three categories of guests at this wedding. Recently, a news story told about three marriage ceremonies. Mary Campbell had to say "I do" three times at three different ceremonies.
The couple wasn't aware that in Illinois at that time they had to be married in the county where they got their license, which was Kane County. After a beautiful ceremony in the Baptist church in Du Page County, they traveled to Lord's Park on the eastern edge of Elgin, thinking that was in Kane County. There they were married in the park, but that also was out of the county, on the other side. The third ceremony took place in the newsroom of the Courier-News, well within Kane County.
