A part of all parents...
Illustration
A part of all parents wish their children never had to grow up. "If only we could only keep them innocent!" But then there are the "terrible twos" followed closely by adolescence. Individuation takes its toll on relationships. A chasm opens between parent and child. Psychologists call it adolescent rebellion, theologians call it Hell ... as do some parents! The theological version of the chasm gives it names: the pit, sin, death, racism (and a number of other 'isms), the seven deadly sins, fear, lies, war, greed, illiteracy, ignorance and a whole lot more, the names of which are an exercise in filling in the blanks. It's driving power is death.
Religious people try to bridge the chasm by being good enough, giving enough, obeying enough, loving enough, praying enough, knowing enough, going to church enough, reincarnating enough or whatever the local guru conjures up as the best way to heaven. Trouble is no one, and I mean no one, has enough stamina to produce that much, which leaves the rest of us with a problem: How is the chasm to be bridged?
Until the Adam and Eve in every one of us realize that the task of bridge building starts with Christ, not with us, we will go on suffering a whole lot of pain and toil.
