In this passage, Paul speaks of a principle with which modern psychologists are familiar. Our behavior and thus our destiny is determined by our perceptions. The ancient philosopher Epictetus claimed that "people are not bothered by things so much as they are bothered by the views they take of those things." To paraphrase Paul on the same issue, if we believe we are in Christ then our behavior will reflect that belief and we will set our minds on higher things.
It is not uncommon to meet people who have risen from humble beginnings to great success. They frequently claim that they were motivated by their childhood poverty to succeed. Others, who grew up in the same neighborhood, may fail miserably at life and claim that they were victims of their circumstances. One reality with two perceptions yields differing destinies.
The scriptural principle is explicit: if you believe in Christ, this is the way you
should walk.
