This passage reminds me of an old joke about a soldier who was repeatedly rebuked for using excessive profanity. The swearing was often prompted by the soldier's frustration with the some monotonous menu in the Mess Hall. He decided to be more discreet in venting his wrath. Next time a particularly obnoxious and repetitious item appeared on the menu, the soldier shouted out, "Hebrews 13:8!" Unfortunately for him, his commanding officer was biblically literate and knew the verse cited was "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever." (KJV) The soldier was appropriately disciplined!
Obviously, this soldier was not engaged in any pious tribute to our Lord. The author of Hebrews used the same words in a far different spirit. He was declaring his deepest and most heartfelt conviction about the performance, faithfulness, and dependability of the Lord and his teachings. He was saying: "I know I can count on the Lord. I know his truth is forever. I know his teachings are changeless."
