A pastor friend told me of an experience he had with a member of his choir. This choir member had a series of problems with her thyroid, and that summer had had a thyroidectomy, her third operation on her neck. Each time she came out of surgery her singing voice lowered, and her vocal chords became more damaged. The Sunday before her surgery, she sang a duet with another woman. At choir practice the previous Thursday, another woman had a fit because this woman would sing on Sunday. The choir had made tentative plans for another song, and the complainer insisted that the choir use the substitute song. Because this could be the last Sunday the woman scheduled for surgery might ever sing again, the choir director gave the go-
ahead to the duet. The woman who was upset by the change in plans, got up, left the choir loft, went to the front pew, folded her arms, and sulked while the choir proceeded. -- Keller
