Pastor, we need you, Pearl...

"Pastor, we need you," Pearl said to me with tears in her eyes. "God has called you to be with us and we give thanks to God because you are here." I tried to stop Pearl's words. She was embarrassing me. I didn't want to be recognized or put on a pedestal. "No," Pearl said. "You listen to me. I know you don't want to think of yourself as special. But you are. All of God's children are special. I give thanks to God daily that God sent you here. God knew best what we needed. Now God has called me to tell you to take care of yourself. You are always taking care of everyone but yourself. If you don't take care of yourself, then you won't be able to do the things that you feel God is calling you to do." Once again I started to deny Pearl's words, but as I opened my mouth to deny her care I stopped. She was right. Two different doctors had just asked me if I wanted to go into the hospital for a week. I thought I could just ignore them and keep on doing all my work. When Pearl had refused to go into the hospital, I'd asked her if she was allowing God to answer the prayers for healing that were being prayed. Now Pearl was reminding me that I had been chosen by God to preach and teach the Gospel. I had been filled and inspired with the power of God's Holy Spirit, but that didn't give me the right to ignore Pearl's care for me. She too had been filled and inspired by the Spirit.
