Patrice Lumumba Moore ended up in the intensive-care unit of St. Barnabas Hospital with cuts, breaks, and bruises after an avalanche of junk fell on him in his New York City apartment as he tried to make his way inside. He was trapped for two days by his collection of "stuff" before a team of neighbors and firemen, using a crowbar, rescued him. It later took some fifty industrial-sized trash bags to remove the books and magazines he had stuffed into just one ten by ten-foot room in his apartment. In San Francisco, a couple were on the verge of a divorce because their house was so filled with the husband's collection of junk that the two of them could not both get into their bed at the same time. And in 1947, Homer and Langley Collyer, the Hermit Hoarders of Harlem, were discovered dead in their Fifth Avenue mansion surrounded by 180 tons of car parts, musical instruments, newspapers, and orange peels.
