Paul Harvey tells about an old man who wanted a school that upheld democracy and treasured education. After many years of preparation, the school was finally opened where there would be no regulations, only the goodwill and judgment of the students. As months went by, it became obvious the experiment was failing -
- students were skipping classes and drinking excessively, and finally one night fourteen of them started a brawl in which one professor was struck with a brick, another by a cane. The trustees called a meeting, and the old man, now 82, was asked to speak to the students. After telling how he had dreamed of his school, and how it had now failed, he began to cry and had to sit down. The fourteen offenders confessed, but the damage was done. The school continued but with many new rules and regulations and a strict code of conduct. The experiment had failed because the students lacked virtue. Only a virtuous people can live in a free society. A short time later, on the fourth of July, the old man died. On his tombstone were engraved the words: "Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the father of the University of Virginia." There can be no civilization without virtue. In the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus shows his disciples the virtues which are necessary to live happily in his kingdom.
