Paul speaks of Jesus having "humbled himself." If anyone was ever justified in not being humble, it would have to be Jesus. Yet Jesus humbled himself. In fact he told about a Pharisee who was proud of himself and of a tax collector who humbled himself.
What is more irritating than some person who is proud because he or she has wealth or fame? When such people leave a group of people, those people often just shake their heads. Our church office has a sign put up long ago which states, "Everyone brings joy to this room, some by entering, some by leaving."
Does it surprise you that some of the most conceited persons are preachers? Fearing that a man should be conceited about his ability to preach, St. Francis of Assisi commanded him to act as doorkeeper and cook until others entered a plea in his behalf. When another asked to be excused from preaching St. Francis sent him to a church to preach wearing only his shorts. St. Francis decided that was too much and so St. Francis humbled himself and went into the church and the pulpit wearing only his shorts.
