Paul Valery wrote, "Two dangers constantly threaten the world: order and disorder." We are familiar with the panic chaos brings. Chaos and disorder of an invading army can cause brave men and women to panic and to give in to the panic. More subtle is the danger of the order we seek to create when we think we are in charge of the world and try to run it for our own pleasure. When our structures fail, when our agreements of detente fail, war may ensue and we are overwhelmed once more. When we seek to be faithful to God who has created an orderly world and we seek to cooperate with that order, songs of thanks rise from our throats instead of cries of faithlessness.
