In Paul's valedictory remarks to the Galatians, he places emphasis on Christian grace. God's grace gives us life and liberty, hope and promise. The daily grace we experience is the best gift of God to us. An ancient legend reminds us that we should not forget the best God gives us through his grace as we walk through the world. The legend tells of a young shepherd lad who picked an unusual flower on a mountain and immediately found a cave opening with yawning invitation below his feet. With both trepidation and interest the shepherd entered the cavern, where his eye caught the glint of piles of sparkling diamonds of unsurpassed beauty. The boy placed the strange flower on a stone and grabbed into his hands the brilliant gems. The sheepherder thought nothing could be better than to grasp those diamonds close to his breast. He immediately ran from the cave, carrying the diamonds. When he did so the cave closed behind him and the diamonds evaporated into worthless dust. Instead of precious jewels the lad now was left bereft as he held a handful of dust. The young man had failed to appreciate the best -- that without the magic flower, nothing taken from the cave would have lasting worth. The best treasure for the Christian is the gospel of grace preached with power and eloquence by Paul and by all who proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. God's amazing grace is the flower of faith in the garden of the world. -- Mills
