Authentic identity comes in knowing and being known by our heavenly Father. W. A. Poovey, in his chancel drama on the prodigal son, speaks through Jeedah (the prodigal): I knew what to do. And I wasn't doing it. Oh, I went to parties and spent my money, showing my fair-weather friends that I was an important guy. But when I went home to my room at night, I knew it was all wrong. There were nights when I cried and prayed and longed for home. I missed my father and I knew he was praying I would come back ... my so-called freedom wasn't worth what I paid for it. And I'm not talking about the money I wasted. It took the pigs to start me home again, but I knew I had made a mistake the day I left ... I've been to the very edge of the pit of sin and loneliness, and it isn't any pleasure. Life is to be lived with those who love you, particularly with the Father above, who wants us all to trust and serve him.
