People sometimes come up with...

People sometimes come up with some strange ideas about Jesus as companion and friend.
When I first saw the poem, "Footprints in the Sand," I thought, That's a nice
comforting idea, but it surely isn't biblical. Then one day while researching another
idea about Jesus, I came across these verses in Isaiah: "For he said, 'Surely they are my
people ... And he became their savior in all their distress. It was no messenger or angel
but his presence that saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted
them up and carried then all the days of old" (Isaiah 63:8-9).
Wow, "He lifted them up and carried them...." Yes, there is a scriptural background for "Footprints in the Sand." In 1936, when she wrote this, the author, Mary Stevenson, knew nothing about copyright and for years didn't try to claim a copyright. In the meantime, others claimed authorship.
If we are honest, we must confess there are times when we are completely helpless. Like a little infant we need someone to pick us up and carry us. Mary needed this assurance when she wrote these words.
Thank you, dear Lord, for speaking to Mary in such a way that she could share this truth with the world. Bless the millions who have found strength and blessing in this poem. Thank you that you do lift us and carry us when we are the weakest and most in need of help. Yes, Lord. Amen.
