The person who subscribes to two sports magazines, watches or listens to regular baseball broadcasts and collects classic ball cards may know who Babe Ruth replaced on the roster of the New York Yankees. The business major in college who studies the history of American automobile manufacturing just might be able to name Lee Iacocca's predecessor at Chrysler Corporation. A diligent student of military history will probably know who preceded Dwight D. Eisenhower at his command post.
But, the overwhelming majority of people will not know the identity of those three people. Because they preceded such well-known personalities, the spotlight of fame emanating from their successor washes them from our memory.
However, there is one notable exception to this common occurrence. Even though he preceded his cousin, Jesus, John the Baptist is almost as well-known as Jesus. Perhaps he is remembered so well because he, him self, is a fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy as he "prepares the way for the Lord."
