Philip Sidney, the English soldier and poet, wrote: "Solitude is the audience-chamber of God." And Ranier Maria Rilke declared: "Reality is possible only at the price of solitude." In the process of fashioning the covenant with his people, God said, "Moses alone shall come near the Lord" (v. 2). De Quincy commented, "All our deeper feelings agree on this: that they seek solitude and are fed by solitude. Deep grief, deep love, deep faith, how naturally all these ally themselves with religion and all of them including religion are sojourners in solitary places."
