"If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' say, 'The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.' "
Recently I watched a television program which had very little to offer by way of a plot, but which repeatedly emphasized an assumption which many have in our society. The hero was a detective who was in pursuit of someone who stole cars; was successful in evading the police, in fact, made them look like fools, and with more than common luck had escaped the clutches of the law, including the special detective who was always in hot pursuit. On several occasions the detective would either be on foot when a car was stolen or, having wrecked his own car, would commandeer a car from some unsuspecting and disinterested motorist. He would simply flash his badge, shout something about police business and say, "I need your car," get in the car and speed away in pursuit of the thief. The assumption is that police have authority in this kind of emergency.
This third verse of Mark 11 indicates that Jesus has lordship over the world he has created. It is his right to command for his use that which he has entrusted to us as his stewards.
