In New York, a gunman opened fire on a policeman during a chase in Brooklyn, hitting the officer at least five times and seriously wounding him. The officer had started in pursuit when he saw the man run out of a shop with a wad of cash in his hand. The shocking thing in the news report was that, according to authorities, while the policeman lay bleeding on the ground, a crowd of people tried to rob him. For people to turn on and try to rob a police officer who was wounded in the line of duty is an act that offends all right-thinking people and that deserves reproach and punishment.
God is angered by injustice, exploitation, and by people being taken advantage of when they are weak and helpless. Jesus speaks stern words about those who hear the cloak of piety and yet will rob widows. "Their punishment," he says, "will be all the worse!" God calls us not only to support justice, but to act justly.
