In Chicago, a child was trapped on the second floor of a burning building, and a fireman's rescue attempt failed when intense heat forced him back down a ladder. But the fireman then dashed into the building without a mask, ran up a flight of stairs, grabbed the three-year-old boy from a flaming room, and brought him outside to safety. Of his action, the rescuer later said calmly, "It was no big deal. It was a bad fire, but I just went in and got the kid." His battalion chief thought that the action was above the ordinary, and the fireman will be recommended for a commendation. Whatever recognition that may lead to, surely the fireman's greatest joy must be the fact that the child for whom he risked his life was saved.
Jesus went all the way to save us. He sacrificed himself to death on the cross in order to bring us forgiveness. He rose from the dead to be honored and exalted by God the Father. He now has joy in knowing that he did not suffer in vain, as he sees the many who are rescued and saved by his sacrifice and through faith in him as their Savior.
