In his Chicago Tribune column of June 25, 1981, Jack Mabley states, "The function of the eye is more than visual. The eye also serves as a channel of light, which affects the functions of the body." Mabley quotes John Ott, a Florida scientific researcher: "Neurochemical channels lead from the retina to the pituitary and pineal glands. These master glands control the endocrine system, which produces and releases the hormones that control body chemistry.
In simpler language, this is telling us that we need natural sunlight or its equivalent in full spectrum artificial light for our physical well-being. As Mabley comments, "A deficiency of light, as studies now indicate, suggests such problems as increased fatigue, decreased performance, diminished immunological defenses, reduced physical fitness, and possibly impaired fertility associated with living and working under incandescent or cool-white fluorescent lights." The recommendation is that we spend as much time as possible in natural daylight or its equivalent.
Natural light is a part of God's physical creation, and whatever beneficial powers it has come from him Isaiah says to Jerusalem, "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you." (60:1 RSV) This healing, renewing, invigorating spiritual light brings joy to Jerusalem, which is a type and symbol of the holy Christian church, and to all the people who are drawn to God's presence in her and who come to share in the new and everlasting life which God offers to us in Jesus Christ.
