The poet, R. S. Thomas, describes Wales as a place with no future but only a past. His withering images portray as much what he feels about Wales as what Wales really is. He demonstrates that a wilderness can be in us as well as around us.
Wildernesses can move around in definition or location -- like America's changing definition of wetlands. If politicians can redefine wetlands, God can certainly redefine wilderness. Our wilderness can catch us anywhere -- a place of chaos or threat where we don't know what to do about our guilt over the past and aren't sure where to aim in the future. In that place, says Isaiah and John the Baptist, God draws near to us.
From Isaiah's Old Testament wilderness, to John the Baptist in the Judean wilderness, to our own wilderness, God draws near. John proclaims God's willingness to scoop us into the cosmic reshaping of life in heaven's kingdom. See why the crowds keep showing up to John the Baptist's speaking and splashing engagements?
