The problem of the early church receiving Gentiles and the resulting controversy it caused for Peter and the apostles has many modern corollaries. Numerous churches today are "For members only." New people are not welcome and any hint of positive change in numerical growth creates chaos in the church. So frustrated was one pastor by this "country club attitude" by parishioners that he posted a "For members only" sign on the front lawn of his church. A bold move, it both amused and angered members of his church. "We must come out of this 'us only' mentality. If we fail to reach others for Christ, we will die a slow death. Now I want you folks to know that I have been called to lead a living people to a resurrected and living God. I was not called to preside over a dead church or officiate an ecclesial burial. If we keep new people out, we can bury this church and all the hard work that went into it." Filled with the Holy Spirit, he exhorted parishioners to stretch beyond the confines of their "postage stamp corner of the world thinking" and embrace a new openness commensurate with the spirit of Christ and the early apostles. By accepting new people, the church experienced growth which made it a center of love, joy and spiritual vitality for all people. Because of this new open door policy, a church with a membership of 50 persons was in ten years transformed into a vital congregation of 1,000. -- Stewart
