Professor Benjamin Bloom of the University of Chicago recently led a group of researchers in a study of the top performers in several different fields to assess what contributed most to their excelling in their respective fields. They picked personalities who were well recognized for their accomplishments in the fields of the performing arts, Olympic swimming, tennis, and research, to name just a few. Before they began their work, they assumed that they would most likely find that these individuals all possessed extraordinary talent for their endeavors. However, their research bore a different result.
Many of those who were interviewed recalled that as children they had not done well in sports, or dancing, or school. But the researchers found a common thread that ran through all their stories. That golden thread was personal determination and persistence. They all possessed a drive to succeed and to accomplish their purposes.
It's interesting that the widow displayed this same type of persistence when she sought the aid of the judge. Jesus used her persistence as an example of how we are to proceed in the spiritual realm. It also requires diligence and persistence.
