The prophet paints a very dismal picture of the world and those who live in it. What's new? Any of us could do the same. It is graphically painted every day before our eyes through the media.
Jeremiah may actually be asking a question that many of us have dared to ask, "Why doesn't God end it all?" The suffering, the sin, and all that seems to be ripping our world apart at the seams.
Even though a hot, strong wind comes from God that could wipe us all out, it doesn't. Why? God wants us to be aware of our destructive ways, turning upward with tears of genuine repentance. This should remind us of Peter's words, "God does not desire that any of us should go into eternity without hope and assurance, but God desires all of us to journey into a changed lifestyle from the inside out" (a personal paraphrase of 2 Peter 3:9).
